Major announcements
Citrix announced Workspace, Analytics, Security Practices and NetScaler Secure Web Gateway during the first day of Synergy 2017:
- Citrix Workspace Service (a.k.a. StoreFront++ or Codename Project Frontdoor)
A new cloud-based service to deliver ALL(not just Citrix) apps and data on an unified and secure Workspace(portal) software defined perimeter - Citrix Analytics Servjce is cloud-based security and performance analytics service to get visibility across the XenApp, ShareFile, XenMobile, and NetScaler ecosystem
- Security Practices is a new Citrix consulting offer focused on Security assessments
- NetScaler Secure Web Gateway helps you deal with encrypted traffic and allows you to use NetScaler as a forward proxy
- XenApp/XenDesktop 7.14 (which was later pulled out from the Citrix website)
- StoreFront 3.11 with only bug fixes
- XenServer 7.2 including NVIDIA GRID vGPU XenMotion and Windows Continuum for Virtual Desktops
- Bitdefender Hypervisor Introspection (HVI) Security Virtual Appliance – Only available for XenServer 7.x
- App Layering 4.2 adding Windows 10 64-bit support into Labs
- Citrix System Optimizer (not available at this time) an equivalent of the VMware OS Optimization tool
- Citrix HDX Ready Pi 3 (SC-T25) with support for Dual Monitors and integrated Skype for Business optimization pack
- Citrix Workspace IOT including Smart Spaces for Collaboration
- Workspace Environment Management 4.3
Already released features that were also part of the announcements included:
- XenApp and XenDesktop Essentials on Microsoft Azure
- XenMobile integration with Microsoft InTune
- G-Suite integration with Sharefile
- Cisco and Nutanix joined HCI Ready Workspace appliance program
- NetScaler 12.0 & NetScaler MAS 12.0
- Support for the new Windows 10 S operating system with Citrix Receiver UWP
- Secure Browser Essentials on Microsoft Azure is a simple cloud based offering for secure remote access to the internet that isolates end user internet browsing from enterprise endpoints and networks
- Support for Microsoft Skype for Business on Google Chromebooks
To be clear, the announcements were disappointing, mostly because of the lack of innovation. When the main innovation (as stated by Kirill) is an Analytics cloud-based service, you have the right to be disappointed. Citrix also barely talked about XenDesktop and XenApp, just mentioning that customers should migrate to XenDesktop 7.14 as soon as possible. But still no new Long Term Service Release (LTSR) available for Windows 10 and Windows Server 2016 as we have to wait until Q3 2017. We discussed the problems with Citrix LTSR in this article.
